Don't let fire safety take a backseat this Christmas

The festive season is a time for joy, celebration, and family gatherings, but it’s also important to stay vigilant about fire safety. The combination of decorations, lights, candles, and increased use of electrical items can pose risks if not managed carefully. Here are some essential fire safety tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe during the festive season:

Electrical Safety

  • Avoid overloading sockets: Plugging too many items into a single socket or extension lead can cause overheating and increase the risk of fire. Use only one plug per socket where possible. Surge protected extension leads are a great option, as they have in-built protection against power surges and can help prevent an overload.

  • Check your Christmas lights: Before putting up your festive lights, inspect them for damaged wires, frayed cords, or broken bulbs. Replace faulty lights immediately and always use lights that meet safety standards (e.g., CE or UKCA marked).

  • Be cautious with second-hand items: If you’re using or buying second-hand electrical decorations or devices, ensure that the chargers and other components are safe and compatible. Avoid cheap or non-branded chargers, as they can be dangerous. Always ensure the charger is meant for the device or toy that you have purchased, as using the wrong charger can not only cause issues charging but could potentially cause a fire.

Candle Safety

  • Never leave candles unattended: If you’re lighting candles to create a cosy atmosphere, always place them on a stable, heat-resistant surface and away from flammable materials like curtains, decorations, or furniture. Extinguish them before leaving the room or going to bed.

  • Use battery-operated alternatives: Consider switching to LED candles for a safer option that still gives a festive glow.

General Safety Tips

  • Keep decorations away from heat sources: Ensure that tinsel, garlands, and other decorations are kept well away from heaters, open flames, or cookers.

  • Test your smoke alarms: A working smoke alarm can save lives. Test them regularly to ensure they’re functioning correctly.

  • Have a fire escape plan: Make sure everyone in your home knows how to get out safely in case of a fire and always keep escape routes clear .

By taking a few simple precautions, you can enjoy a festive season that’s not only magical but also safe.

In the event of a fire in your home, try to ensure that you are out of the property before calling 999 . If you’re unable to make it out of the property, follow the instructions given to you by the call handler. Do not attempt to re-enter the property once you have left, wait until the attending fire service has told you it is safe to do so.

Fire safety notices are displayed in the communal areas of all of our blocks of flats, retirement living and short-stay accommodation. Make sure you read them and know what to do if a fire breaks out.
