Gas Safety Week
This week is Gas Safety Week - an annual safety week to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of your gas appliances.
The theme this year is 'Checking – Every Check Counts' and emphasises the importance of regular gas safety checks.
Every year we carry out an annual Gas Safety Check in each of our homes to ensure we keep our residents, communities and homes safe. It is really important you allow us entry to carry out these essential annual safety checks as failure to do so puts your household and others who live near you at risk.
You will receive a letter from us informing you when your annual appointment is due. If you are unable to keep this appointment, please let us know so that we can arrange an alternative date and time. We can be flexible with you to make sure the check is completed.
It’s important that you report any issues with your gas appliances immediately so we can keep you safe. Our Gas Safe registered contractor, Mears, completes gas safety checks on our behalf. They will present ID when they arrive for your appointment. If you’re unsure who the person at your door is from, please call us on 01733 385030 and someone will be able to confirm the appointment.
Badly fitted gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions, and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. That’s why wherever there is a gas appliance installed in one of our residents homes, we fit carbon monoxide alarms.
By taking care of your gas appliances properly and spotting the warning signs of an unsafe appliance, you’re taking care of your home and your loved ones. Follow these few simple steps to keep you and your family safe.
- Check for warning signs that could indicate your (or someone else's) gas appliances are not working correctly. Signs may include lazy yellow / orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance, a pilot light that keeps going out or too much condensation in the room.
- Avoid blocking vents during cold spells. Vents are there to make sure your gas appliances work safely. Blocking them could prevent this.
- Never DIY on a gas appliance. If you suspect there’s something wrong with your appliance, or it’s not working correctly, please call us on 01733 385030.
- Allow us access to your home for your annual gas safety checks. If you rent your home from us, we’re legally required to service your gas system every year. It’s essential that you allow us into your property to service your gas appliances. This is for you and your family’s safety. You’ll be given plenty of notice of the appointment, so please let us know if you need to rearrange.
- If you smell gas call Cadent on 0800 111 999. Turn off the gas using the lever by your gas meter. Do not use any electrical equipment, naked flames, switch lights on or off, or smoke. Open all windows and doors, leave your home immediately and alert your neighbours.
- Look out for your local community. You may have a friend, relative or neighbour who is unaware of what they need to do to keep safe. Help them stay safe by making sure that they have their appliances checked and serviced regularly.
