Resident Awards 2022

It is time to celebrate our 2022 Residents Awards Winners! As always, our Resident Awards are about celebrating individuals who achieve incredible things for themselves and their communities.

Choosing our winners was tougher than ever but eventually, and after much deliberation, we selected a winner in each category and 10 runners up who all went above and beyond during 2022. Each of our winners and runners up were nominated by their neighbours, and we awarded them with a Love2shop voucher just in time for Christmas.

Here are your 2022 winners:

 

Good neighbour

Winner

Amy’s neighbour wanted to recognise her ‘super neighbour powers’ because she is so kind, supportive, encouraging and understanding. She has been volunteering at the local Youth Club, looking after pets and picking up children from school for her neighbour who fled domestic abuse as they build their confidence.

Runners up

Debbie has been bringing neighbours together and giving their street a sense of community as she with the community describing Debbie’s actions as making them feel safe and not alone.

Melvyn has been a continuous support since his neighbour had a heart attack in April. He has helped with endless projects at home and supported him and his wife at difficult times. They say they nominated Melvyn ‘as it’s time we made him smile’.

 

Good Neighbour, Retirement Housing

Winner

Tom is a keen gardener and set up a memorial garden for victims of covid at Blossom Court. He has also transformed a neglected corner into a Jubilee garden at his own expense. Tom is always busy outside maintaining both garden areas for his neighbours to enjoy.

Runners up

Diane and Maureen work together to make sure that life at The Acres is jam-packed with social and community activities, like cocktail nights, BBQs and Halloween events.

John has thrown himself into the community at Kingfisher Court with great enthusiasm. He runs a weekly bingo session, arranging all the prizes and refreshments. John and his wife have also become the resident dog sitters for their neighbours’ pets with a reputation of spoiling them.

Wayne is happy to do anything for anybody. Nothing is ever too much, from DIY to car troubles, Wayne is always out and about supporting someone. No Job is ever too big or too small, he will always do his best to help.

 

Volunteer of the year

Winner

Sharon manages the CKH Mental Health Pottery Group in South Bretton, giving her time to support others who want to meet new people, grow in confidence and work on their mental health recovery. Sharon was nominated by the group because of the difference she has made to their lives.

Runners up

Sandra has always found time for the CKH Careers Club in Westwood and the Westraven Community Garden, even while being a carer for family members. Sandra tries to improve her knowledge of the support available and is due to start a level 5 Award in Education and Training to further develop her skills.

Wendy always has a smile for everyone, at the Westraven Community Café. She is there to listen and share a joke with all the customers, as well as making the best hot chocolate! She goes out of her way to help with anything she can. When she isn’t in the Café it just isn’t the same.

 

Young achiever

Winner

Kai put his mum into the recovery position and rang an ambulance immediately earlier this year, his quick thinking saved her life as she suffered an unexpected stroke. Since his mum has come home from hospital he has continued to help as much as he can. Kai is our deserving winner for being so brave and caring.

Runners up

Summer attended a Tall Ships you persons’ voyage with Ken Stimpson Community School in a leadership role. During her time there, Summer developed in confidence, guiding, and motivating the younger students in the tasks required which led to Summer being considered as a suitable candidate to return to Tall Ships in the role of volunteer Watch Leader for future voyages.

Demie is a 14 year old who has struggled with anxiety for around 3 years. Demies’ family moved home just over a year ago to help give her a fresh start. Since then, she has overcome many obstacles all by herself, including home schooling. A year later, she has started to socialise and applied for a college place. To see how far she has come is truly inspirational.
